Szczecin, Poland - Provincial Library

The project consisted of an augmentation to the existing library located in the 19th century city centre. The two heritage buildings were connected with a post war extension to create one functional unit
(GPS 53.423024,14.553027). A politically powerful investor provided difficult to fulfill requirements which did not respect conservation standards. However the project had to go ahead as indoor environmental conditions were detrimental to the valuable book collections. The need for space for the new library required that an existing historic building located in the middle of the site be removed. Existing apartment buildings adjacent to the library were not included in the project. In 1987 the design reached the pre-construction stage and it was canceled due to the lack of funds.
